Wax: a fabric, a story

Le wax : un tissu, une histoire - Afro Garden

Through its bright colors, wax is also a message vector highlighting a cultural heritage. Belonging to African traditions, it has symbolic value in the way it is worn and adopted.

Indeed:

- If you are wearing two loincloths on top of each other, it means you are married.

- A loincloth tied on the side indicates that you are a heart to take!

Likewise, the illustrations represented on these loincloths will retrace a story, a know-how, a belief or a state of mind.

Meaning of the most famous patterns:

The wedding flower : a must! No need to present it anymore. This loincloth adorned with hibiscus flowers, is offered to the newlyweds. It will symbolize a multitude of blessings including happiness in marriage, and can also be a source of wealth and success (it depends on belief).

The disc: also called "Target" (target in French), this loincloth dating from the 60s is a reminder of the old vinyl records that were used to play music.

The swallows : this loincloth, synonymous with good omens, embodies freedom, happiness and fertility.

The eye of my rival : in Côte d'Ivoire, this motif is synonymous with family tensions and reveals the differences between women, especially co-wives. The abstractly drawn eyes underscore the rivalry and that one should keep an eye out for her husband.

If you too want to revive your interior and pay tribute to these emblematic fabrics, the illustration “ La vie en wax ” is available on the e-shop in the “Posters” section.
